Canoeing Safaris

Paddle among hippos and flamingos

Overview of the Experience

Paddle gently on the quiet Momella Lakes in Arusha National Park or along the shores of Lake Manyara. Get up close to flamingos, kingfishers, and giraffes drinking at the water’s edge while enjoying views of Mount Meru. Unlike standard game drives, a canoeing safari allows you to experience nature from a quiet, water-level angle. You will drift silently past herds of waterbucks, bushbucks, and giraffes standing on the banks, and watch birds dive for fish. Led by an experienced canoeing guide, you will paddle sturdy, two-person canoes on calm waters, ensuring a relaxing and peaceful wildlife excursion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do the canoes capsize easily?

No, we use wide, stable two-person touring canoes that are specifically designed for flat water. Capsizing is extremely rare, but life vests are provided for all guests as a precaution.

Are there crocodiles or hippos in the lake?

Yes, hippos live in these lakes. However, your guide is highly experienced and knows their territories. We keep a safe, respectful distance (at least 100 meters) from all hippos. There are no large crocodiles in the lakes where we operate.

Do I need previous canoeing experience?

Not at all! The waters are calm and flat, and the guide will teach you basic paddling strokes before you launch. The pace is slow and relaxed.
