6-Day Family Mid-Range Safari Adventure

Your family is met at Kilimanjaro International and driven the hour into Arusha. Outpost Lodge is a sensible first night with children: gardens to run around in, a pool, and a kitchen used to feeding people at odd hours after long flights. Nothing is scheduled today beyond letting everyone reset.

Jet lag is the thing to manage on day one, and the pool does more for it than anything else. Get the children outside and moving in daylight, eat early, and start tomorrow properly rested. Your guide will come by to say hello and go through the week. It is worth having the children in that conversation, because they ask better questions than adults do.

A short drive south to Tarangire, deliberately the first park: close enough that nobody is stuck in a vehicle for hours, and reliable on the two animals children actually care about. Elephants are everywhere here, often with calves, and the giraffes stand at eye level with the roof hatch open. An easy afternoon game drive follows.

Tarangire is the right park to start a family safari. The game is visible without much hunting for it, the baobabs are strange enough to hold anyone's attention, and the drives can be kept short. Nobody's first day in the bush should involve four hours of looking for something that never appears.

The long driving day, handled with breaks. You climb through the Ngorongoro Highlands with a stop at the crater viewpoint, a genuine gasp moment at any age, and a visit to a Maasai village where the children usually end up joining in a dance. Then the descent onto the Serengeti plains and into camp.

Be honest with yourselves about this day: it is several hours in a vehicle. Snacks, downloaded films, a window seat each and a game of who-spots-what all help. The compensation is real, though: Naabi Hill Gate opens onto grass running to the horizon, and children who have been restless all morning tend to go quiet at that point.

A full day of family game drives at a pace that suits everyone: an early start while the animals are active, back to camp through the hot middle of the day, and out again in the afternoon. There is a Junior Ranger session with your guide, learning to identify tracks and dung and read what has passed through camp overnight.

The Junior Ranger session is usually the thing the children talk about afterwards. Being handed a task (find this track, work out which way it was walking), turns them from passengers into participants. It is also the fastest way to teach an eight-year-old to sit still and watch, which benefits everyone in the vehicle.

Away after breakfast and east to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, then straight down 600 metres onto the crater floor for the big game drive of the trip. Black rhino, lion, elephant, buffalo and flamingos on the lake are all in play, and the crater delivers more in a few hours than most parks manage in days. Picnic lunch by the hippo pool, then up and out to a family lodge in Karatu.

The crater is the day that converts children into safari enthusiasts. Everything is close, everything is visible, and there is no long wait between sightings. Even the ones who declared themselves bored of animals on day three tend to be back at the roof hatch within twenty minutes of reaching the floor.

A relaxed family breakfast at the lodge with no early start, then the comfortable drive back east to Arusha. There is time for souvenir shopping or a light lunch before the transfer to Kilimanjaro International for your flight.

Six days is about right for a first family safari: long enough to see the crater and the Serengeti properly, short enough that nobody has run out of patience with the vehicle. If you are thinking about extending, a few days on the Zanzibar beaches afterwards is the usual and very sensible next move.
