7-Day Signature Northern Circuit Mid-Range Safari

Your Springbok guide is waiting at Kilimanjaro International with your name on a board, and the drive into Arusha takes about an hour. Outpost Lodge is deliberately low-key: green gardens, a pool, and somewhere to decompress after a long flight. Dinner is a chance to meet your guide properly and go through what the week holds, park by park.

Arusha is the gateway to the entire northern circuit, sitting at 1,400 metres in the shadow of Mount Meru. The altitude keeps the evenings cool and the town busy: coffee traders, Maasai in from the steppe, and safari vehicles being loaded on every other corner. It is a working city rather than a resort, which is a good part of its appeal.

An early breakfast and a short drive south bring you into Tarangire by mid-morning, which leaves time for a full day inside the park rather than a rushed afternoon. Lion, giraffe, zebra and wildebeest come without much difficulty, along with the greater kudu that Tarangire is quietly known for. Lunch is a picnic under a baobab before you continue to Sangaiwe.

Tarangire's character comes from two things: the river and the baobabs. The river is the only permanent water in this part of the country, so in the dry months everything walks to it, and the elephant herds gather in numbers you will not see elsewhere on the circuit. The baobabs, some over a thousand years old, give the park a genuinely prehistoric look.

This is a travel day that earns its place. You climb through the Ngorongoro Highlands, where the air turns cool and misty and the roadside is farmland and forest, then drop out the far side onto the Serengeti plains, a transition abrupt enough that it takes a moment to process. An afternoon game drive around Seronera brings your first proper Serengeti sightings before you reach camp.

Kati Kati is a mobile tented camp pitched in the middle of the park, without fences. Dinner is under canvas, the light comes from paraffin lamps rather than floodlights, and you are walked back to your tent after dark for good reason. It is the closest most people come to actually sleeping in the Serengeti.

A full day with nothing to do but look. You leave at dawn, when the plains are cold and the predators are still working, and stay out through the best hours. Cats get much harder to find once the heat builds and they push into shade, so the early start is not for its own sake. The afternoon drive picks up again as the light lengthens.

The Seronera area holds a resident population that never migrates, because the river keeps water here all year. That means lion prides holding the same territory across generations, cheetah out on the open grass, and leopard along the watercourses. Your guide spends the day reading tracks, listening for alarm calls, and watching where the vultures are turning.

An unhurried morning game drive as you work your way out of the Serengeti, then the long climb back east into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. You stop at a Maasai village along the way, which is a real chance to ask questions about how pastoral life works on land shared with wildlife. Rhino Lodge sits in the forest just back from the crater rim.

Ngorongoro is a conservation area rather than a national park, which means Maasai still graze cattle here alongside the wildlife. One of the few places in Africa where that arrangement has survived. At 2,300 metres the rim gets properly cold after dark, and elephant and buffalo often move through the forest around the lodge at night.

You are at the descent road early, dropping 600 metres to the crater floor while the mist is still burning off. Around 25,000 large animals live inside the caldera, and few places on earth offer a realistic shot at the Big Five in a single morning. Lunch is a picnic by the hippo pool, with more game driving before you climb out toward Karatu.

The crater is the collapsed cone of a volcano that once rivalled Kilimanjaro. Its walls act as a natural enclosure, which is why the game density is so extraordinary, and why the black rhino population, one of the last viable ones in northern Tanzania, has held on here when it vanished almost everywhere else.

A final half day in Lake Manyara, the smallest park on the itinerary and the most unexpected. You enter through thick groundwater forest full of baboons and blue monkeys, then come out onto open floodplain with the soda lake ahead and the Rift Valley escarpment rising behind it. By early afternoon you are back in Arusha for your airport transfer.

Manyara is a good park to finish on. After the scale of the Serengeti and the spectacle of the crater, it brings you back to detail: flamingos working the shallows, hippos jammed into the pools, and the tree-climbing lions that made the place famous, if you are lucky enough to pick one out along a branch.
