10-Day Northern Circuit Classic Luxury Safari

Your guide meets you in the arrivals hall at Kilimanjaro International Airport and drives you the hour or so into Arusha, where a suite at Gran Meliá is waiting. There is no rush today. Settle in, swim, sleep off the flight, and in the evening sit down with your guide over dinner to walk through the ten days ahead, camp by camp, so you know exactly how the safari unfolds.

Arusha earns more than a night's stopover. It sits in the shadow of Mount Meru at around 1,400 metres, which is why the air feels cooler than you expect, and it has been the staging post for northern Tanzania's safaris for a century. Its coffee estates, curio markets and Maasai traders give you a first real taste of the country you have come to see.

After breakfast you leave Arusha behind and head southwest, tarmac giving way to the open country of the Maasai Steppe. You reach Tarangire in time for lunch at Oliver's Camp, tucked into a private concession in the park's quiet southern reaches. The afternoon belongs to your first game drive, and it tends to be a memorable one, elephants in the dozens moving between the baobabs as the light softens.

Tarangire is the elephant capital of northern Tanzania. In the dry months the river running through its heart is the only reliable water for miles, and it draws in herds several hundred strong, along with the zebra, wildebeest and eland that follow them. The baobabs give the park a strange, ancient character you will not find anywhere else on the circuit.

With a full day and no drive ahead of you, you can go deep. Head out after an early breakfast into the southern swamps and the remote country beyond, where far fewer vehicles reach. Lunch is a proper bush picnic laid out in the shade, and the afternoon drive runs on until the light goes. The hours either side of dawn and dusk are when the cats move.

The swamps in Tarangire's south stay green long after the rest of the park has dried out, which makes them extraordinary for game. Lion prides here are large and unbothered by vehicles, leopard haunt the riverine trees, and the park's bird list runs well past 500 species. It is also one of the few places in Tanzania where you may find a lion up a tree, draped over a branch to escape the heat.

You leave Tarangire after a last morning drive and turn north toward the Rift Valley, where the escarpment rises in a wall above the lake. Lake Manyara Serena sits on the lip of that escarpment with the whole valley laid out below it. Once you have settled in, an afternoon game drive takes you down into the park itself.

Manyara is small (you can cross it in an afternoon), but it holds more variety than parks ten times its size. The road enters through dense groundwater forest fed by springs at the base of the escarpment, alive with blue monkeys and baboon troops, then opens abruptly onto floodplain and soda lake. Flamingos gather pink along the shallows, hippos wallow in the pools, and the lions here have a genuine habit of climbing trees.

A morning game drive gives you a final look at Manyara's forest and lakeshore before you climb west into the Ngorongoro highlands. The road winds up through farmland and cloud forest and then, without much warning, the trees part at the viewpoint and the entire crater opens out beneath you. Your afternoon is free at &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, perched right on the rim.

The lodge is famous for a reason. Its suites are built into the crater wall with floor-to-ceiling windows facing the caldera, so the view that stops everyone at the viewpoint is simply there, from your bed, all evening. Sunset over the crater at 2,300 metres is cold enough to want the fire lit, which is part of the pleasure.

You descend early, dropping 600 metres down the crater wall as the mist is still lifting off the floor. What follows is the densest concentration of large animals anywhere in Africa, held inside a caldera you can drive across in an hour. This is your best chance on the whole itinerary of seeing black rhino, while lion, elephant, buffalo and hyena are close to guaranteed. A private champagne lunch is set up for you in a quiet corner of the floor, and the afternoon takes in a Maasai boma on the way out.

The crater is the collapsed cone of a volcano that once stood higher than Kilimanjaro. Its walls now enclose roughly 25,000 large animals across 260 square kilometres, including bull elephants carrying some of the heaviest tusks left in Africa, old males who retire to the Lerai forest.

This morning you climb out of the highlands and point northwest, and the landscape changes completely. Cultivated slopes give way to short-grass plains, and by the time you pass through Naabi Hill Gate the horizon is nothing but grass and sky in every direction. You reach the Seronera Valley in the early afternoon with time for a game drive, then settle into Four Seasons for three nights.

Serengeti means endless plains in the Maasai language, and the drive is the only way to understand why. Seronera, at the centre of it, is the park's beating heart: a year-round river that holds resident lion prides through even the driest months, and riverine acacias and sausage trees that make this the most reliable leopard country in Tanzania.

Two game drives today, timed to the animals rather than to the clock. You leave at first light with coffee in the vehicle, when the plains are cool and the cats are still hunting, and come back to the lodge through the heat of the middle of the day. The second drive runs out into the late afternoon and the long golden hour that photographers travel here for.

A full day in one place is what separates a good safari from a rushed one. Your guide can follow a lion pride across a morning rather than glance at it and move on, sit with a cheetah that is clearly working up to a hunt, and read the vultures and alarm calls that lead to a kill. Seronera rewards patience far more than mileage.

An optional balloon flight is the way to start today if you want it: lifting off in the dark, drifting a few metres above the grass as the sun comes up, and landing to a champagne breakfast laid out under an acacia (booked separately). Whether or not you fly, the day carries on with game drives into country you have not covered yet, and ends with sundowners by the pool as the light drops.

Ranging wider on your last full day pays off. Depending on the season your guide may push north toward the Grumeti or east onto the open plains, following where the herds have moved. From December to March the migration is calving on the southern short grass; from June the columns are pushing north. Either way, the Serengeti in front of you is never quite the same park twice.

There is time for one last game drive before you leave, and it is worth taking. The Serengeti has a habit of saving something for the final morning. Afterwards you return for breakfast, pack at your own pace, and begin the transfer back to Arusha, arriving with time to freshen up before your onward flight.

Ten days is long enough for the rhythm of the bush to get into you: the early starts, the silence between engine noise, the way your eye learns to pick a shape out of the grass. Your guide sees you to Kilimanjaro International Airport with the paperwork sorted. Most people leave already working out when they can come back.
