8-Day Grumeti River Crossings · Western Corridor Migration

You are met at Kilimanjaro International and taken into Arusha, roughly an hour's drive. The hotel is comfortable and straightforward, and the evening is unstructured apart from a briefing with your safari guide, who runs through the eight days and the country you will be covering.

This itinerary heads west rather than north, which is the less-travelled route through the Serengeti. The Western Corridor is a long finger of park reaching out toward Lake Victoria, and comparatively few visitors go there, which is precisely the argument for it.

A scenic drive west, climbing through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area highlands with the crater rim off to one side, then descending onto the Serengeti plains. The last part of the day is a game drive through the Seronera Valley rather than a transfer, and you settle into camp in the late afternoon.

The descent onto the plains is the moment the trip properly begins. The highlands are green, cultivated and enclosed; the Serengeti is none of those things. The grass simply runs out to the horizon in every direction, and the sense of scale takes most people a day or two to absorb.

A full day around Seronera, working the resident lion prides, checking known leopard territories along the watercourses, and looking for the cheetah families that use the open ground. Two drives, with the hot middle of the day back at camp.

Seronera is dependable in a way no migration-based sighting can be. Its river runs year-round, which means territory rather than transit, the same prides in the same valleys season after season. Your guide will know individual animals here, and that turns a sighting into something you can follow rather than simply photograph.

You game drive west rather than simply driving west, following the country as it changes from open short grass into taller grass, riverine woodland and rolling hills. Depending on the month you may be moving alongside the herds themselves, which use this corridor between roughly May and July. Camp tonight is in the Western Corridor.

Mbalageti sits high on its ridge with the plains dropping away below, which is one of the better views in the park. The Western Corridor is a long arm of the Serengeti stretching toward Lake Victoria, defined by two rivers, the Grumeti and the Mbalageti, running through otherwise dry country.

A full day tracking the migration along the Grumeti River, searching for crossing points and watching the herds work the banks. The Grumeti's crocodiles are the stuff of documentaries: enormous, ancient animals that feed heavily during these few weeks and then barely at all for the rest of the year.

The Western Corridor is quieter and wilder than the central park, with a fraction of the vehicles. Resident lion prides here are large, and the combination of river, woodland and open plain supports species you see less often further east: colobus monkey in the riverine forest, and good numbers of hippo in the permanent pools.

A final game drive in the Western Corridor, then the long journey east and up into the Ngorongoro highlands. It is a full day on the road, but the country does the work. You cross the entire width of the Serengeti before climbing out of it into forest.

The change is total. You leave hot, low, open country at around 1,200 metres and finish at 2,300 in montane forest where mist comes through the trees and the evening needs a fire. Buffalo and elephant use the woodland around the lodge, so guests are walked to dinner after dark.

An early descent, 600 metres down the wall to the crater floor, for a half-day Big Five safari. Lion, elephant, buffalo and hyena are close to certain; black rhino are the one worth hoping for, and leopard occasionally show in the Lerai forest. Picnic lunch by the hippo pool, then you climb out and drive down to Karatu for the night.

The crater works as a natural enclosure. Its walls keep around 25,000 large animals inside 260 square kilometres with permanent water and grazing, which is why nothing here needs to migrate at all. After a week following herds across the Serengeti, that permanence is a striking note to end on.

A relaxed morning and the drive back east to Arusha, down the escarpment and out of the highlands, arriving for a farewell lunch before your transfer to Kilimanjaro International for the flight home.

Taking the western route rather than the northern one means you have seen a side of the Serengeti most visitors never reach. The Western Corridor gets a small fraction of the traffic, and if you caught the herds along the Grumeti you saw a river crossing without the queue of vehicles the Mara draws in season.
