7-Day Cultural Tanzania: Maasai, Hadzabe & Local Life

Welcome to Tanzania. You'll be met at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your lodge in Arusha. Evening welcome dinner and a cultural briefing with your guide, who will introduce you to the communities you will meet over the coming days.

A morning drive to Tarangire National Park, with a full-day game drive among baobabs and elephant herds. We overnight on the edge of the Rift Valley, in a community-owned camp where Maasai families live and work.

A respectful, community-led visit to a Maasai homestead. We walk with warriors through the bush, learn about traditional pastoral life, the construction of an inkajijik (manyatta homestead), and the role of cattle in Maasai society. Lunch is a traditional goat stew, prepared by the women of the village. Afternoon: optional milking, beadwork, or spear-throwing lessons.

A scenic drive to Lake Eyasi, on the floor of the Rift Valley. In the early morning of the next day, we will join the Hadzabe - one of the last remaining hunter-gatherer tribes on Earth - on a dawn hunt with bows and poisoned arrows. The Hadzabe have lived this way for tens of thousands of years, and the experience is humbling and unforgettable.

Pre-dawn departure to join the Hadzabe on a morning hunt. We walk silently through the bush as the men track and hunt small game, the women gather berries and tubers. We share a traditional breakfast in the bush. Midday: visit the Iraqw farmers of Karatu for a coffee farm experience - from bean to cup, with lunch in the garden.

A descent into the Ngorongoro Crater for a half-day safari on the floor of the world's largest intact caldera. The crater is one of the best places on Earth to see the Big Five, with a particularly high density of black rhino. Picnic lunch by the hippo pool, then ascend and return to Karatu.

A morning Swahili cooking class in a local home in Karatu, learning to prepare pilau, samosas, and chai masala. Lunch is the food you've prepared. Afternoon: return to Arusha, with a stop at a local market. Drop at the airport or transfer to your onward destination. Transfer to the airport for your departure.
