6-Day Budget Northern Tanzania Camping Safari

Met at Kilimanjaro International and driven straight south to Tarangire, arriving for an afternoon game drive among the baobabs and elephant herds. Camp tonight is a designated public campsite just outside the park, with tents provided and your cook getting dinner going while you are still out.

Going directly to the park saves a night and a hotel bill, which is the logic of the whole trip. The camping is straightforward rather than glamorous (a dome tent, a mattress, shared facilities), but it puts you in the bush on day one for a fraction of what the lodge version costs, and the game drives are identical.

A full day of game drives with a bush picnic under a baobab. Tarangire holds one of the densest elephant populations in Tanzania, and lion, leopard and cheetah are all present for those willing to look, with a bird list running past 550 species. In the late afternoon you drive out to Mto wa Mbu to camp.

Mto wa Mbu is a lively town at the foot of the escarpment, irrigated from the highlands and consequently green all year. It is one of the most ethnically mixed places in Tanzania, with well over a hundred groups farming side by side, and the campsite is a good place to get a sense of ordinary Tanzanian life between parks.

A long day on the road, climbing through the Ngorongoro Highlands, past the crater rim and down onto the Serengeti plains, with an afternoon game drive around Seronera once you arrive. You camp tonight at a public campsite inside the park itself.

Sleeping inside the Serengeti is the part of this trip people remember. There are no fences at the Seronera campsite, hyena work the perimeter through the night, and lion carry a very long way in the still air. It is a completely different night from a lodge room with a lock on the door, and it costs a fraction as much.

A full day in the Seronera area, the most predator-rich habitat in the park, with a bush picnic and a late-afternoon drive to catch the best light and the most active hours. Lion prides along the river, leopard in the acacias, and cheetah on the open ground are all realistic in a single day.

Seronera is productive because its river never dries, so the resident game stays put year-round regardless of where the migration has got to. That reliability is what makes a full day here worth far more than a day spent driving between parks. You can stay with a sighting instead of moving on.

A morning game drive on the way out of the Serengeti, then the long drive east and up to Karatu, where you camp for the night. It is an early finish by design, because tomorrow starts before dawn for the crater descent.

Karatu sits in the highland farming country at around 1,500 metres, and the change from the hot plains is immediate: cool evenings, deep red volcanic soil, and coffee growing on every slope. After several nights inside national parks, camping in a town with a shop and a bar counts as a small but genuine luxury.

An early descent 600 metres to the crater floor for a half-day safari while the game is most active. Around 25,000 large animals live inside the caldera, and lion, elephant, buffalo, hyena and flamingo are near-certainties, with black rhino the one to hope for. Picnic lunch by the hippo pool, then the drive back to Arusha by early evening.

Six days of camping covers the same three headline destinations as the lodge itineraries (Tarangire, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater) at a price that puts a proper Tanzanian safari within reach of people who would otherwise never get here. What you give up is comfort. What you keep is all of the wildlife.
