7-Day Signature Northern Circuit · Camping Safari

You are met at Kilimanjaro International and driven into Arusha, about an hour on the main road. Arusha Tourist Inn is simple and clean: a bed, a shower, and somewhere to reorganise your bag before the camping starts. Your guide comes by for a briefing: what the days look like, what to keep within reach in the vehicle, and how the camping side actually works.

Nearly every safari in northern Tanzania begins in Arusha, and the town is worth a walk if you still have the energy. It sits at 1,400 metres under Mount Meru, so the evenings are cool, and the central market is a good, unpolished introduction to the country before you head into the parks.

A morning drive south brings you into Tarangire, with game drives through the afternoon looking for the elephants and lions the park is known for. You camp inside the park tonight at the public campsite, and your cook has a hot dinner ready when you get back, usually a good deal better than you expect from a field kitchen.

Camping inside a national park is the whole argument for this trip. There are no fences, so elephant walk through the site at night and you will hear hyena, and sometimes lion, calling in the dark. You are sleeping in the same country the animals are using, which is not something a lodge can sell you.

A long driving day, up through the Ngorongoro Highlands and out onto the Serengeti plains, with game drives along the way to break it up. The transition is the point: cool green farmland and forest gives way, quite suddenly, to grass running flat to the horizon in every direction. You reach Seronera and pitch camp in the middle of the park.

Seronera Public Campsite is about as central as accommodation in the Serengeti gets. It puts you a short drive from the river valley where the resident lion prides live, which means you are among game within minutes of leaving camp in the morning rather than driving an hour to reach it.

A full day out in the Seronera Valley, leaving early with a packed lunch. Hippo pods crowded into the pools, leopard draped in the acacias along the water, and lion prides that are usually visible somewhere along the river. Your guide works the radio network with the other drivers, which is how the best sightings get found.

Seronera is the most predator-rich part of the Serengeti because the river holds water all year, so the game does not have to leave with the migration. That makes a full day here worth far more than a day spent driving between parks. You can stay with a single sighting and let it develop instead of moving on.

A morning game drive as you leave the Serengeti, then the drive east and up to the Ngorongoro crater rim. Tents go up at Simba Campsite, which sits right on the edge with the whole caldera dropping away below. Dinner is around the fire, and you will want every layer you brought.

Simba is a cold camp: 2,300 metres, wind coming over the rim, and nights that get close to freezing. It is also one of the great campsites anywhere in Africa. You wake up, unzip the tent, and the crater is simply there in front of you with mist still sitting on the floor. Zebra and buffalo often graze between the tents.

You descend early, before the day visitors come up from Karatu, dropping 600 metres to the crater floor for a half-day game drive. Black rhino, lion and buffalo are the targets, and the density of game down here is unlike anywhere else you will go. Afterwards you climb out and drive back to Tarangire to camp.

The crater is the caldera of a volcano that collapsed in on itself around two and a half million years ago, and its walls now work as a natural boundary keeping roughly 25,000 large animals inside. It is one of the last strongholds of black rhino in northern Tanzania, which is why the early start matters. They are most visible in the first hours.

A final morning safari in Lake Manyara before the drive home. The park is small but it changes fast: thick groundwater forest at the gate, then open floodplain with flamingos strung along the shallows and the Rift Valley escarpment behind. Tree-climbing lions are its claim to fame and always worth scanning the branches for. You are back in Arusha in the afternoon for your flight.

A week of camping gets you closer to this country than any lodge itinerary does. You have slept inside three parks, eaten under canvas with the bush going about its business around you, and covered the whole northern circuit for a fraction of what the lodges cost.
