7-Day Signature Northern Circuit Luxury Safari

You are met inside the terminal at Kilimanjaro International and driven to Gran Meliá Arusha, where check-in happens in your room rather than at a desk. The rest of the day is yours: the spa, the pool, or simply a long sleep in a dark, quiet room. Dinner is a proper fine-dining affair, and your guide joins you to walk through the week ahead.

Gran Meliá is the most polished hotel in northern Tanzania and it sets the tone for everything that follows. It sits in landscaped grounds with Mount Meru filling the view, at an altitude that keeps the evenings pleasantly cool. Starting here rather than at an airport hotel means the safari begins the moment you land.

A relaxed departure south to Tarangire, arriving in time for game drives through the heart of the park. The elephants are the headline (Tarangire holds the largest concentration in northern Tanzania), moving in long lines between baobabs that have stood for a thousand years. You reach Lemala Mpingo Ridge in the late afternoon for drinks on your private deck as the sun drops.

Mpingo Ridge is built along an escarpment overlooking the Tarangire River valley, and each suite is glass-fronted with its own plunge pool facing the view. Game moves along the valley floor below you throughout the day, which means the sightings do not stop when you get back to camp.

You climb west through the Ngorongoro Highlands (cool, green, and farmed), and then the land falls away into short-grass plains that run to the horizon and keep going. The afternoon is spent working the Seronera area for big cats before you arrive at Lemala Nanyukie for two nights.

Nanyukie sits in a quiet corner of the central Serengeti with kopjes scattered around it, the granite outcrops that lions use as lookouts and shade. The tents are enormous, with freestanding baths and private decks, and the camp is unfenced, so zebra and giraffe drift through the grounds during the day as a matter of routine.

Morning and afternoon game drives, with the middle of the day spent back at camp out of the heat. The dawn drive is the serious one: you are out as the light comes up, when lion are still finishing the night's work and cheetah are moving before the ground gets too hot. Depending on the month, the migratory herds may be within reach.

The Serengeti covers nearly 15,000 square kilometres, and the central Seronera region is its most reliably productive corner because the river keeps water here year-round. Resident prides hold territory along it permanently, leopard use the riverine acacias and sausage trees, and the open grass either side is prime cheetah country.

A last Serengeti game drive, then the drive back east and up into the highlands. You stop at a traditional Maasai boma along the way, a proper visit with time to ask questions rather than a photo stop, before arriving at Neptune Ngorongoro Luxury Lodge near the crater rim.

The rim sits at 2,300 metres and the temperature drop is immediate; fires get lit in the evening and you will want the extra layer you packed. The lodge is set in forest just back from the edge, which means buffalo and elephant pass through the grounds regularly and the walk to dinner is done with an escort.

An early descent into the caldera for a half-day safari on the floor, timed to put you down there while the game is still active and before the vehicles build up. This is the best chance you will get at black rhino, and lion, elephant, buffalo, hyena and flamingo are all near-certainties. Afterwards you climb out and return to Lemala Mpingo Ridge for a final evening.

Ngorongoro packs roughly 25,000 large animals into 260 square kilometres, held in by walls 600 metres high. The result is a density found nowhere else on the continent, and, because the herds have no need to migrate, a permanent population that makes the Big Five in a single morning genuinely achievable.

A final morning game drive in Lake Manyara, entering through the groundwater forest and coming out onto the lakeshore. This is the park of tree-climbing lions and flamingos in the shallows, a smaller and more intimate finish after the scale of the crater. You return to Arusha in time for your departure flight.

Manyara is a fitting last park because it works at a different register. The forest is dense and full of movement (baboon troops, blue monkeys, hornbills), and then it opens without warning onto the soda lake with the Rift Valley wall standing behind it. Seven days on, you will be reading the bush far better than you were on day one.
