7-Day Ndutu Calving Season Luxury Safari

You are met inside the terminal at Kilimanjaro International and driven to Gran Meliá Arusha, the most polished address in northern Tanzania. The evening is unstructured (the spa, the pool, or a long sleep) before a welcome dinner at which your guide walks you through the week and where the herds are currently standing.

A calving safari lives or dies on current information. The wildebeest concentrate on the southern plains from January into March, but their precise position moves with the rain, sometimes by tens of kilometres in a few days. The advantage of a private guide is that the itinerary bends toward the animals rather than the other way round.

Fly or drive south to the Ndutu plains, trading several hours of road for a light-aircraft hop if you prefer. Either way you arrive in time for an afternoon game drive. Lemala Ewanjan is a tented camp positioned for exactly this season, and the first drive takes you straight out among the calving herds, with cheetah working the open grass around them.

Ndutu at calving time is one of the great wildlife concentrations on earth. Something in the region of a million and a half wildebeest gather here alongside zebra and gazelle, drawn by short grass growing on volcanic soil unusually rich in the calcium and phosphorus a nursing female needs.

Morning and afternoon game drives with the middle of the day back at camp. Ndutu sits on the conservation-area side of the boundary, where off-road driving is permitted, and your guide will use that permission properly: positioning ahead of a stalking cheetah rather than chasing behind her, and holding a low angle beside a herd for as long as the light is good.

At peak calving, upwards of 8,000 calves are born each day. It is a deliberate strategy: by concentrating almost the entire year's births into three weeks, the herds swamp the predators, and most calves survive simply because there are too many to take. The result is the highest density of predator activity you will see anywhere.

A morning safari at Ndutu, then north into the central Serengeti, game driving through the transition as short grass gives way to acacia woodland and granite kopjes. You arrive at Four Seasons Safari Lodge and into a suite overlooking the waterhole, which is where a good deal of the afternoon tends to go.

The lodge is built around that waterhole, and it is not a decorative one. Elephant come in through the day, often within a few metres of the deck, along with buffalo, giraffe and whatever else is passing. It is the rare lodge where the game viewing does not stop when the vehicle does.

Sunrise and late-afternoon game drives, with the hot middle hours spent at the lodge. The dawn drive is the one that matters. You are out as the light comes up, when lion are still on the move and cheetah hunt before the ground heats. The Seronera area holds resident game year-round, so this is big-cat country regardless of where the migration has got to.

Seronera's permanent river is the reason. Water all year means lion prides hold the same territory across generations, and leopard have reliable cover in the riverine acacias and sausage trees. Your guide will know the individual animals, which turns a sighting into a story rather than a photograph.

The drive back east and up into the Ngorongoro highlands, gaining the better part of a thousand metres as plains give way to farmland and then to montane forest. You arrive at Neptune Ngorongoro Luxury Lodge in the afternoon, where the private fireplace in your room stops being a novelty the moment the sun goes down.

The rim sits at 2,300 metres and is genuinely cold after dark, a shock after a week on the hot southern plains. The forest around the lodge is used by elephant and buffalo, and staff escort guests to dinner for good reason. It tends to be the most atmospheric night of the trip.

An early descent for a half-day game drive on the crater floor, timed to put you down there ahead of the crowd and while the animals are still active. Black rhino are the headline (this is one of their last strongholds in northern Tanzania), with lion, elephant, buffalo, hyena and flamingo effectively guaranteed. A hot lunch is served before you climb out and return to Arusha for your flight.

The crater makes a fine ending because it inverts everything that came before. You spent the week among animals in constant motion, following rain across enormous distances. Here you finish with a population walled into 260 square kilometres that has never had any reason to leave.
