9-Day Western Serengeti & Grumeti Reserve · Private Camps

Met at Kilimanjaro International and driven to Arusha Coffee Lodge, which sits inside a working coffee plantation on the edge of town. The chalets are set among the coffee itself, and the evening is a welcome dinner and briefing with your guide before an itinerary that will be almost entirely airborne between camps.

The plantation is not a theme. It is one of the oldest coffee estates in the region and still in production, and you can walk the rows in the morning if you are up early enough. After a long flight, the smell of roasting coffee and the cool highland air make a good first impression of Tanzania.

A morning flight to the Seronera airstrip: an hour or so in the air with the Rift Valley and the crater passing beneath you, instead of a full day on the road. Your guide meets the aircraft and you head straight out on an afternoon game drive through the Seronera Valley before arriving at the lodge.

Flying between camps is the defining feature of this itinerary. Across nine days it saves two or three days that would otherwise be spent driving, and every one of those hours goes back into game viewing instead. It also means you arrive fresh rather than dust-covered and stiff.

A full day around Seronera: resident lion prides, established leopard territories along the river, and the cheetah families that hunt the open ground. Morning and late-afternoon drives, with the hot hours spent at the lodge, which is built around a waterhole elephant use throughout the day.

Seronera is the most reliable big-cat country in Tanzania because its river holds water all year. That permanence means territories are held across generations and the guides know individual animals on sight, so a sighting arrives with history attached rather than being a stranger in the grass.

A short morning flight to the Grumeti airstrip and into a completely different part of the ecosystem. The afternoon game drive introduces the reserve: quieter, wilder and far less visited than the central park. Grumeti holds enormous lion prides, good cheetah, and one of East Africa's more reliable populations of African wild dog.

Singita Grumeti is a private reserve bordering the national park, roughly 350,000 acres held under a conservation concession. The practical consequence is exclusivity (very few vehicles across an enormous area) alongside a level of anti-poaching and habitat management that has brought wildlife numbers back substantially over the past two decades.

A full day in the reserve, focused on the wild dog packs, the big lion prides, and (if the timing is right), the Grumeti River crossings, which happen as the migration passes through this corridor around May to July. A private bush picnic is set up somewhere with a view.

Wild dogs are the draw for anyone who knows what they are looking at. There are perhaps 6,000 left across the whole continent, and they hunt in coordinated packs with a success rate far above lion or cheetah. Following a pack on the move is one of the more thrilling things you can do from a vehicle.

A second full day here, with time to range further. The Grumeti Forest is within reach and chimpanzee tracking is possible in season, which is a rare thing to be able to add to a Serengeti itinerary. Off-road driving is permitted throughout the reserve, so your guide can position properly for photography rather than shooting from a track.

That off-road permission is the quiet luxury of a private concession. Inside the national park you stay on established tracks, which fixes your angle and your distance. Here your guide can bring you round into the light, hold a low position beside a pride, and stay with a hunt as it moves rather than losing it at the first turn.

A morning flight to the Manyara airstrip, then the drive up the escarpment into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, climbing steadily through farmland and cloud forest to the crater rim. The afternoon is at leisure, which here means sitting with one of the great views in Africa.

Ngorongoro Serena is built along the rim itself, low and stone-clad so that it disappears into the wall, with every room facing the caldera. At 2,300 metres it turns properly cold once the sun drops, and watching the crater floor fill with late afternoon light and then with mist is worth surrendering an afternoon to.

A full day on the crater floor rather than the usual half. You descend early and stay down, which changes the experience considerably: time to work the Lerai forest for elephant and the occasional leopard, time at Lake Magadi with the flamingos, and a genuine chance at black rhino rather than a passing look. Picnic lunch by the hippo pool.

Most visitors get four or five hours down here. A full day means you are still on the floor in the late afternoon once the day-trip vehicles have gone, the light has softened and the predators start to move again. It is the single best upgrade available anywhere on the northern circuit.

A morning drive or flight back to Arusha depending on your onward timings, down out of the highlands and back into the world of tarmac and traffic. From there it is the airport, or a transfer on to Zanzibar or wherever you are heading next.

Nine days with flights between every camp is about as much of northern Tanzania as it is possible to see without rushing any of it. You have had the central Serengeti, a private reserve most visitors never set foot in, and a full day inside the crater, three quite different propositions rather than three versions of the same one.
