6-Day Mara River Crossing & Ngorongoro Crater Safari

Met at Kilimanjaro International and driven into Arusha, roughly an hour on the main road. Outpost Lodge gives you a quiet evening, a good meal and a proper bed before six days that will cover a great deal of ground. Your guide joins you at dinner to run through the route and, crucially, the current position of the herds.

River crossings cannot be booked. The herds gather on the banks and then go, or do not go, according to logic nobody has fully worked out. A crossing may happen twice in one day or not for a week. What a good guide can do is put you in the right country at the right time of year, and then be patient with you.

A long, scenic drive west: up through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, past the crater rim, across the highlands and down onto the Serengeti plains. You game drive the final stretch into the Seronera Valley and reach Kati Kati Tented Camp during the afternoon.

Kati Kati is a mobile camp in the middle of the park with no fences, no mains power and nothing between the canvas and the bush. Dinner happens under a lamp, the staff walk you back to your tent afterwards, and the sounds through the night are the reason people choose a camp over a lodge in the first place.

A morning game drive through the Seronera Valley, then the long push north toward Kogatende, with the country changing the whole way. The northern Serengeti is greener, hillier and more broken than the central plains, all rolling ridges and riverine forest. You reach Serengeti Mara Camp and head out along the river in the afternoon.

The north sees a fraction of the vehicles the central park does, which changes everything about how a sighting feels. It is also where the migration spends roughly July to October, moving back and forth across the Mara River in a pattern that has nothing to do with any timetable and everything to do with grass and rain.

A full day on the river. You take a vantage point above one of the known crossing points and you wait, picnic lunch in the vehicle, watching the herds build on the ridges above the banks. It may take an hour. It may take all day. When it happens it is sudden, chaotic and genuinely overwhelming, thousands of animals pouring down a bank into water holding some of the largest crocodiles in Africa.

Not every day produces a crossing, and any operator promising one is selling something they cannot deliver. What the day does guarantee is time in extraordinary country: the river lined with hippo and crocodile, lion waiting on the ridges for exactly the event you are waiting for, and the tension of a gathering herd that is worth the wait on its own.

A final morning drive in the north, then the long journey south and east toward the Ngorongoro highlands. It is a serious day's driving, broken by game viewing as the country shifts from the wooded north back through the central plains and up into the highlands. Rhino Lodge on the crater rim is the reward at the end of it.

The scale of the Serengeti only really registers on a day like this. You drive for hours and remain inside a single protected ecosystem the entire time: nearly 15,000 square kilometres in the national park alone, and around 30,000 counting the wider Serengeti-Mara system the migration actually uses.

An early descent into the crater for a half-day safari on the floor. After days following animals that never stop moving, the crater is a study in the opposite: a permanent population of around 25,000 large animals held inside 260 square kilometres by 600-metre walls. Lion, elephant, buffalo, hyena and flamingo are close to guaranteed, black rhino the one to hope for. Picnic lunch by the hippo pool, then back to Arusha.

It is a fitting close. The migration is about movement, two million animals walking a thousand-kilometre circuit every year in search of grass. The crater is about staying put. Seeing both inside a week tells you more about how this ecosystem works than either would alone.
