Your guide is waiting when you come through at Kilimanjaro International, and the road into Arusha runs about an hour through country that is already recognisably East African. Outpost Lodge is quiet and green, and the point of tonight is simply to arrive properly: eat, sleep, and let the journey settle before the driving starts.

Mount Meru stands over the town at 4,566 metres, and on a clear evening its jagged profile is the first genuinely African thing many visitors see. It is a collapsed volcano, blown open along one side, and the ash it laid down over millennia is part of why the plains you are heading toward grow the grass that draws the migration.

An early departure, driving southwest and gaining height through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area before dropping down the far side onto the Ndutu plains. The last part of the descent is the part people remember, as the grass opens out and the herds resolve from scattered dots into something continuous.

Ndutu lies on the south-eastern edge of the Serengeti ecosystem, where the plains are at their shortest and most open. This is where the migration comes to give birth every year, and it is not sentiment that brings them. It is the mineral content of the volcanic soil, which grows grass rich enough to carry a lactating female through the hardest weeks of her year.

A full day among the herds, out early and back late, with lunch taken in the vehicle. Calving here runs from roughly January into March, and at the peak the plains are covered with newborns: a calf can stand within minutes and keep up with a moving herd inside the hour, which it needs to, because it is being watched from every direction.

What makes Ndutu exceptional for photographers and patient watchers alike is the off-road access. On the conservation-area side of the boundary your guide can leave the track, which means low angles, close approaches, and the ability to stay with a single animal for as long as the situation holds rather than losing it behind a ridge.

A morning drive through the herds one last time, then north into the Serengeti proper, working slowly up through the Seronera Valley with the roof open the whole way. This is a game drive that happens to end somewhere new rather than a transfer, and by mid-afternoon you are at Serengeti Heritage Camp.

The transition is worth watching for. Short grass gives way to longer grass, then to scattered acacia and the granite kopjes that define the central park. The wildlife changes with it. You leave the wildebeest behind and start seeing giraffe, elephant, and the resident predators that live here regardless of what the migration is doing.

A full day of game drives around Seronera, following the resident lion prides, checking the leopard territories along the watercourses, and looking for the cheetah families that work the open ground. Two drives split around the heat, with time back at camp in the middle of the day.

Seronera is the most predator-dense corner of the Serengeti because the river runs year-round. The lions here hold the same territory across generations, and the acacias and sausage trees along the water are as reliable a place to find leopard as anywhere in Africa. Your guide will be reading tracks and listening quite as much as looking.

An easy morning drive east and up out of the Serengeti, taking a final game drive along the way, no reason to rush a road that crosses this much good country. You gain altitude steadily through the conservation area and arrive at Rhino Lodge on the crater rim in the afternoon, into cooler air and forest.

At 2,300 metres the rim has weather of its own. Mist rolls through the trees in the late afternoon, the temperature drops fast once the sun goes, and the forest around the lodge is used by elephant and buffalo. After days of heat and dust on the plains, a cold evening beside a fire is a genuinely welcome contrast.

You descend early, 600 metres down the wall to the crater floor, for a half-day safari while the animals are still active. The concentration down here is unlike anything else on the trip, around 25,000 large animals inside 260 square kilometres, with lion, elephant, buffalo and hyena all but guaranteed and black rhino the one to hope for. Picnic lunch by the hippo pool, then back up and on to Arusha.

Seven days gives you both halves of this ecosystem. Out on the plains you watched animals in constant motion, following rain and grass across enormous distances. In the crater you finish with the exact opposite: a permanent, self-contained population that has never needed to move at all.
