Tour Highlights
DAILY SCHEDULE
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 01Arrival in Arusha
Arrival in Arusha
Met inside the terminal at Kilimanjaro International and driven to Gran Meliá Arusha, where you check in from your room rather than at a desk. The evening is yours to use or ignore entirely (spa, pool, or an early night), with a welcome dinner and safari briefing whenever you are ready for it.
Starting at Gran Meliá rather than an airport hotel sets the tone. It sits in landscaped grounds beneath Mount Meru, at an altitude that keeps the evenings cool, and it is the last place on this itinerary that will be anywhere near a town. From tomorrow, everything is bush.
Day 02Arusha to Central Serengeti
Arusha to Central Serengeti
A light-aircraft flight straight into the central Serengeti: an hour in the air rather than most of a day on the road, and a spectacular hour at that, with the Rift Valley and the crater passing beneath you. You are met at the airstrip for an afternoon game drive through the Seronera Valley before arriving at Four Seasons.
Flying in is what makes an eight-day luxury itinerary work. Every hour not spent on a transfer is an hour spent in the field, and on a trip built around an unpredictable event, more time in the right country is the only real advantage money can buy.
Day 03Full Day Serengeti Game Drives
Full Day Serengeti Game Drives
Morning and afternoon game drives across the central plains, with the hot middle of the day at the lodge. Cheetah on the open ground, lion prides along the river and leopard in the riverine trees are all realistic in a single day here. Dinner and drinks afterwards on a deck above the waterhole.
That waterhole is the lodge's real asset. Elephant come down to drink through the day, sometimes within a few metres of where you are sitting, along with buffalo and giraffe. It is one of the few places where the afternoon off is not actually a break from game viewing.
Day 04Fly to Northern Serengeti
Fly to Northern Serengeti
A scheduled flight north to Kogatende, landing on a strip within easy reach of the Mara. Your guide meets you and transfers you to Sayari Camp, and you head out on an afternoon game drive along the river to see where the herds are sitting and which crossing points are active.
Sayari is one of the best-placed camps in the northern Serengeti, close enough to the river that you can be at a crossing point within minutes of leaving in the morning. In a game where timing is the entire proposition, that proximity is worth a great deal.
Day 05Mara River Crossings
Mara River Crossings
A full day on the banks of the Mara, with a gourmet picnic set up wherever the herds look most promising. The waiting is the experience: animals massing on the ridges, moving down toward the water in slow surges, backing off, gathering again. It can take hours, and then it takes ninety seconds.
The Mara's crocodiles are the largest in the ecosystem, some exceeding four metres, and they have organised their entire year around these few weeks. Lion and hyena work the far bank for whatever comes out. It is not a comfortable spectacle, but it is the most compelling wildlife event in East Africa.
Day 06Mara River Crossings
Mara River Crossings
A second full day, moving between the crossing points and the northern grasslands depending on what the river is doing. Crocodiles are visible along the banks throughout, and the kopjes back from the water hold lion that use them as lookouts over the plains below.
Two days on the river is the entire point of the itinerary. Crossings are genuinely unpredictable, the herds may cross four times in a day or hold on the bank for a week, and no amount of money changes that. What it can change is how many days you are there, and how well positioned you are when it finally happens.
Day 07Scenic Bush Flight to Lake Manyara & Ngorongoro Crater Floor Safari
Scenic Bush Flight to Lake Manyara & Ngorongoro Crater Floor Safari
A morning scenic flight from Kogatende to Manyara airstrip, with the Rift Valley opening out beneath you on the approach. Your private guide meets you and drives up the escarpment into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and you descend 600 metres onto the crater floor for a full game drive: black rhino, lion prides and flamingos among the highlights. A hot gourmet lunch is served by the hippo pool before you climb out to your cottage at Neptune Ngorongoro.
Doing the flight and the crater on the same day is ambitious, and it works only because the flying removes the driving. You wake on the Mara and are on the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater by lunchtime. A transition that on a road-based itinerary would take the better part of two days.
Day 08Scenic Fly-In Return to Arusha & Farewell Departure
Scenic Fly-In Return to Arusha & Farewell Departure
A slow breakfast overlooking the volcanic highlands, with no early start for the first time in a week. Then a short fly-in transfer from Manyara airstrip back to Arusha, a day room and lunch at Gran Meliá to shower and repack properly, and a private chauffeur transfer to Kilimanjaro International for your evening flight home.
The day room matters more than it sounds. Rather than going straight from a crater lodge to a long-haul flight in the clothes you have been wearing in the bush, you get a few civilised hours to reset. It is a small piece of planning that makes the journey home a great deal more pleasant.
