5-Day Mount Meru + Manyara/Ngorongoro Combo

The climb begins at Momella Gate at 1,500 metres inside Arusha National Park, where an armed ranger joins the group: a requirement rather than a flourish, because the forest here holds buffalo and elephant. The trail winds up through montane forest with colobus monkeys in the canopy and giraffe standing out in the glades, reaching Miriakamba Hut at 2,500 metres.

Starting a trek inside a national park makes Meru unlike anything else in Tanzania. On the first day you are walking through genuine big-game country on foot, which is both a privilege and the reason your ranger keeps an eye on the treeline as you go.

A climb out of the forest into open moorland, where Meru's shape finally becomes clear: a horseshoe crater blown open on its eastern side, with a near-perfect ash cone rising from the floor. Saddle Hut sits at 3,570 metres, reached by early afternoon, with an optional walk up Little Meru at 3,820 metres to help acclimatisation.

Do the Little Meru walk if you can. It is ninety minutes and 250 metres of gain, and it noticeably improves how tomorrow feels. From the top, on a clear afternoon, Kilimanjaro sits on the eastern horizon looking exactly like the mountain everyone imagines.

A midnight start along the crater rim, a narrow and genuinely exposed route with a long drop on one side: more of a mountaineering feel than Kilimanjaro despite being 1,300 metres lower. You reach Socialist Peak at 4,566 metres for sunrise, then face the long descent all the way back to Miriakamba at 2,500 metres.

Sunrise from Socialist Peak is the point of the whole climb. Kilimanjaro rises out of the cloud to the east, lit pink and then gold, with the ash cone of Meru's own crater directly below you. It is a more dramatic summit view than Kilimanjaro itself offers, which is Meru's quiet claim to fame.

A morning descent through the forest to Momella Gate, then a game drive through Arusha National Park: giraffe, zebra, warthog, and flamingos on the Momella lakes. From there you transfer west and south to Lake Manyara, arriving in time for an afternoon game drive, and the trip changes character entirely.

The switch from mountain to safari in a single day is a good one. You finish the morning still stiff from summit night and end the afternoon watching hippo from a vehicle in the Rift Valley. Manyara is a gentle place to begin the safari half: dense groundwater forest at the gate, then open floodplain, flamingos, and the park's famous tree-climbing lions.

An early descent 600 metres down the crater wall for a half-day safari on the floor. The concentration is extraordinary (around 25,000 large animals inside 260 square kilometres), with lion, elephant, buffalo, hyena and flamingo all but certain and black rhino the one to hope for. Picnic lunch by the hippo pool, then you climb out and return to Arusha by early evening.

Five days that take in a 4,566-metre summit and the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater is a remarkably efficient use of a week. You have climbed a mountain, walked through big-game country on foot, and finished inside the most densely populated wildlife area in Africa.
