Mount Meru is Kilimanjaro's little sister - a spectacular volcanic peak in Arusha National Park, often overlooked in favor of its famous neighbor. We think that is a mistake. Meru is beautiful, uncrowded, and a brilliant acclimatization climb for anyone planning to summit Kilimanjaro afterwards. The 4-day trek reaches the summit at Socialist Peak (4,566m) via a dramatic knife-edge ridge, with wildlife-rich lower slopes and spectacular views of Kilimanjaro from the top.
Mount Meru is the secret weapon of Kilimanjaro climbers. A few days on Meru dramatically improves your acclimatization - and your summit chances on Kibo. Plus, the trails are empty and the views are spectacular.

Day 01Arrival in Arusha and Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut
Arrival in Arusha and Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut
Met at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your lodge in Arusha. A morning drive to Arusha National Park and the Momella Gate (1,500m). The trail begins in montane forest, with giraffes, buffalo, and colobus monkeys. We reach Miriakamba Hut (2,500m) by early afternoon.
Day 02Miriakamba to Saddle Hut
Miriakamba to Saddle Hut
A climb through the moorland, with views of the Meru crater and the ash cone. We reach Saddle Hut (3,570m) by early afternoon, with time to rest and acclimatize. Optional afternoon walk to Little Meru (3,820m) for further acclimatization.
Day 03Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak to Miriakamba Hut
Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak to Miriakamba Hut
A midnight start for the summit push. We climb through the alpine desert under starlight, reach the summit of Socialist Peak (4,566m) at sunrise - with views of Kilimanjaro floating above the clouds, weather permitting. We then descend all the way back to Miriakamba Hut (2,500m).
Day 04Miriakamba to Momella Gate and Return to Arusha & Departure
Miriakamba to Momella Gate and Return to Arusha & Departure
A final descent through the forest to Momella Gate (1,500m), with a short game drive through Arusha National Park en route - keep an eye out for giraffes, zebras, and flamingos on Momella Lake. Transfer back to Arusha by early afternoon. Transfer to the airport for your departure.
