ABOUT THIS ROUTE

The Whiskey Route - the most scenic tented climb

Our most popular tented route and the choice of repeat climbers. A dramatic profile that climbs high early (Barranco Wall) for excellent acclimatization, then rewards you with the most varied scenery on the mountain - rainforest, moorland, the Shira Plateau, the Lava Tower, and finally the Stella Point sunrise approach to Uhuru.

Machame starts on the lush south-western slope and quickly gains altitude, with a deliberate "climb high, sleep low" day at the Lava Tower (4,630m) before descending to Barranco. That single acclimatization day is the reason Machame success rates are consistently high. The path is steep in places, especially the famous Barranco Wall scramble, but the camping is comfortable and the views are unforgettable.

The Machame Route is the route we recommend most often. The seven-day version is long enough for proper acclimatization, short enough to be a realistic commitment, and scenic enough to feel like a real adventure from start to finish. The descent via Mweka means you see different scenery on the way down, which keeps the trip interesting all week.

WHY THIS ROUTE

What Makes Machame Route Stand Out

Crosses five distinct climate zones in seven days - the most varied scenery of any route

The Lava Tower acclimatization day is one of the mountain's most efficient altitude profiles

Includes the famous Barranco Wall scramble - a short, fun, non-technical climb that everyone talks about

Tented camping at scenic camps with wide-angle views of the plains below

High summit success rate even with the shorter 7-day schedule

Routes can be customized to a 6-day version for time-pressed climbers (slightly lower success rate)
