ABOUT THIS ROUTE

The Coca-Cola Route - gentle slopes, hut-to-hut comfort

The oldest and most established path up Kilimanjaro, with the only hut-based accommodation on the mountain. A gradual profile and shorter duration make it accessible to fit first-timers, while still rewarding you with a sunrise summit on the roof of Africa.

Marangu starts on the southeast flank of Kilimanjaro and climbs through rainforest, moorland and alpine desert to Kibo Hut, where summit attempts begin at midnight. The path ascends and descends the same way, which keeps the logistics simple but means you see the same scenery twice. Hut accommodation is a real advantage in bad weather - wooden bunks, hot meals served in a dining hut, and a roof when the rains come.

The Marangu Route is the only path on Kilimanjaro that uses built hut accommodation, which makes it a strong choice for travellers who prefer a bed to a tent and want hot meals served in a dining room. The trail is the most gradual of all the routes, and the path is the widest and best-maintained on the mountain.

The trade-off is traffic - Marangu is the busiest route, especially during the dry season. If solitude matters, consider Machame, Lemosho or the Northern Circuit instead.

WHY THIS ROUTE

What Makes Marangu Route Stand Out

The only route with built hut accommodation - proper beds, hot meals and protection from the weather

Gradual, well-maintained path that suits first-time climbers and trekkers without prior altitude experience

Shorter minimum duration (5 days), useful for travellers with tight schedules

The Mandara and Horombo Huts have rainwater collection and solar lighting

Sundown at Horombo, with Mawenzi and Kibo turning pink, is one of the mountain's best photo stops

A real acclimatisation day at Horombo (3,720m) gives your body time to adjust

PREPARE FOR SUCCESS

Your Part of the Partnership

We handle permits, logistics, crew, and meals. Your job is to arrive fit, well-equipped, and ready to walk slowly. The better you prepare, the more you will enjoy every camp and every sunrise.

Train over 8–12 weeks

Build endurance with hiking, cycling, or swimming. Add a weighted daypack in the final month.

Break in your boots

Blisters end more treks than fatigue. Wear your trekking boots on long walks before you fly.

Practice layering
