Lemosho's high-altitude variant - quiet start on the plateau

Shira Route

The Shira Route is a variant of the Lemosho path that starts on the Shira Plateau (around 3,500m) rather than climbing up to it. This means less distance on the first two days, but also less natural acclimatization. The route is quiet, scenic, and well-suited to climbers who are confident at altitude and want a less-crowded version of the Lemosho experience.

ABOUT THIS ROUTE

Lemosho's high-altitude variant - quiet start on the plateau

The Shira Route is a variant of the Lemosho path that starts on the Shira Plateau (around 3,500m) rather than climbing up to it. This means less distance on the first two days, but also less natural acclimatization. The route is quiet, scenic, and well-suited to climbers who are confident at altitude and want a less-crowded version of the Lemosho experience.

The Shira Route starts with a 4×4 transfer from Londorossi Gate to the Shira Plateau, where the trail begins at around 3,500m. This skips the rainforest section of Lemosho and gives you a high-altitude start - scenic, but with less natural acclimatization. From the Shira Plateau the route joins the Lemosho path at Shira 2 Camp, then follows the proven Lava Tower acclimatization day before the final push.

The Shira Route is the right choice for climbers who are confident at altitude and want a quieter version of the Lemosho experience. The 4×4 transfer up the western slopes is a memorable start, and the Shira Plateau is one of the most spectacular landscapes on the mountain. The trade-off is less natural acclimatization on the first day, so we recommend this route to climbers with previous high-altitude experience.
